Book Beginnings and The Friday 56

Happy Friday Everyone! I am changing it up a little bit this week and doing a different blog meme…WOW. Book Beginnings is a blog meme hosted by Rose City Reader where you share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading. You also share your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, etc.

I also decided to participate with The Friday 56 since it ties in nicely to this blog meme. The Friday 56 is hosted by Freda’s Voice. The idea is to post a teaser of the book from page 56. So let’s begin…

Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate

“I noticed several weird things about the surfboarding cat.

Thing number one: He was a surfboarding cat.

Thing number two: He was wearing a T-shirt. it said CATS RULE, DOGS DROOL.

Thing three: He was holding a closed umbrella, like he was worried about getting wet.”

Jackson’s family has been going through a hard time. Due to these hard times they may have to leave their home and live in their minivan…again. Crenshaw is a large, outspoken cat that was Jackson’s imaginary friend. He has come back…to help. Okay, I am halfway through this book and am really liking it even though it covers a dark topic. Now lets take a look at page 56.

“I thought about whether it might be an ax murderer. But taking a bath didn’t seem like an ax murderer kind of thing to do…I opened the door all the way. Crenshaw was taking a bubble bath.”

What do you think? Want to dive in?

  1. Destiny, you are the fourth person I have come across reading Crenshaw! I look forward to the full reviews so I can see if I should check it out! I had never even heard of it until today, but that is good that you are liking it. I enjoyed The One and Only Ivan so I have high hope for this one, too!

    1. I saw it on another classmates blog and then ran across it at the library. I decided to give it a try and am loving it although it is a bit hard to read at times because it’s sad nature. I’ll post a review for it here soon and I hope you will check it out. It’s defiantly the same writing style and it’s a pretty quick read.

  2. I can’t wait to read Crenshaw. It’s been on my list for awhile, since I’ve seen so many classmates post about it. I don’t know if you saw the good news, but Katherine Applegate is writing The One and Only Bob! I’m so excited. I’ll have to remember the “56” book blogging meme. Do you suppose we could choose our own page number to find a quote from? 🙂 thanks for sharing!

    1. I did see the good news! I am super excited to see what she does with “The One and Only Bob.” I would really suggest “Crenshaw.” It’s a pretty good book in my opinion but I also really just enjoy Applegate’s writing style as well so that might have an effect on my opinion. The blog meme is about page 56 but I think it would be perfectly okay to find a different quote from a different page!

  3. What a cool idea for a book meme. I might have to try and use this one! This cat book sounds really interesting. I see that it does tackle tough subjects and the ax murderer excerpt was pretty interesting. I am not sure if I would want to dive in or not. I think the imaginary friend aspect of it, would turn me away but perhaps I should give it a try. What would you rate this book on a 1 to 10 scale?
